Boyette Family Farms invites you to bring your students to get lost in our classroom on the farm.  We have created a unique and educating fun alternative to the standard classroom. Reservations are required for all field trips.

When are field trips?

Field trips are available for school groups during the month of October Tuesday – Friday 10:00am-2:00pm.

What’s included on the field trip?

Option 1:  Learning how pumpkins go through their life cycle; Seed, vine, flower, green (immature pumpkin), orange while in front of the pumpkin patch.  Lets do a few experiments does a pumpkin sink or float?  Do different sizes give different results? How many seeds are in a pumpkin, children will have to guess then we will cut open a pumpkin to see.

  • This usually last 1 hour depending on your group size.
  • All aboard an old cotton wagon for your tour by hayride around the farm.
  • Depending on the time you have scheduled your trip it may be time for lunch/snack. We have a picnic shelter, with tables and a hand washing station.
  • We have three fun houses, which include a cow milking station, corn box, spider web, hay maze obstacle course, 3D fun house, jumping pillow, rat races and several other activities.
  • On the way back to the buses students can stop and pick out their pumpkin from the designated section of the field. Students will be informed on how to pull the pumpkin from the vine.

Option 2:  Learning about corn while in front of our corn maze; root, stalk, husk, ears, cobs, kernel, tassels and silk.  A brief corn history with fun facts, corn products guess and show, and how our maze is designed and cut.

  • All aboard an old cotton wagon for your tour of the farm by hayride.
  • Depending on the time you have scheduled your trip it may be time for lunch/snack. We have a picnic shelter, with tables and a hand washing station.

  • October is national popcorn month therefore each student will receive a bag of popcorn to pop at home.

We can also customize any field trip to relate to your classroom needs.  We have kindergarten through high school students come visit us.  Please don’t hesitate to let us know your needs and we will try to accommodate them.

What can I take back to the classroom?

Option 1:

  • Math:  What do you use pumpkins for? A graph might work best, pie chart or bar graph.  Cheesecake, muffins, bread, pumpkin seeds, and pies.
  • Science:  What is a pumpkin?  Discuss the difference between fruit and vegetable.

Have students describe the cycle of the pumpkin by writing and drawing.   There are several different types of pumpkins but they are all pumpkins.  Discuss the physical attributes height, weight, color and ridges of different pumpkins.

Option 2:

  • Math:  What do you use corn for?  A graph might work best, pie chart or bar graph.  Corn pudding, popcorn, cornbread, cooked of corn.
  • Science:  What are the different parts of the corn?  Have the students draw corn and label the root, stalk, husk, ears, cobs, kernel, tassels and silk. How does popcorn pop?  Pop a bag of popcorn and explain water is storedin a small circle of soft starch in each kernel.  As the kernel is heated, the water is heated and the droplet of moisture turns to steam and the steam builds up pressure until the kernel finally explodes.
  • History:  Is corn completely native to America?  Who was the first to introduce corn to the world?

Helping you plan:

Please gather all field trip money from students, parents (non chaperones) and siblings that are attending the field trip.  If you are paying with a county check please make it payable to Boyette Family Farms or you may pay cash upon arriving.   All of our activities are outdoors please review the students’ allergies.  For bee stings, hay, straw and anything else that is essential to this trip.  We only have a minor emergency first aid kit available.  Everyone should dress as though going to a working farm play clothes and tennis shoes or rain boots.   Groups sizes will vary but you know your students better than anyone so please help us with your best judgment on group sizes.  A staff member will be with the group guiding and helping throughout the farm.

  • Cancellations:  If you need to cancel please call (919)553-0016 and speak to someone directly or send an email.  This must be done by the Monday before your scheduled trip in order to receive your deposit back.
  • Weather:  If the weather is questionable you may call the day before your trip to determine what options are available or you may call before departing from school to come to the farm.
